Digital Mapping Systems
I recently came across an interesting article on digital mapping systems that was written by Bill Park (2008) entitled Digital Mapping (DM) Systems - My Personal View. The article is available for download from the Anquet Maps Web site. Click here to see it.
The main issues covered by the article are as follows:
What do you get for your money and what can you do with it?
Is DM a realistic alternative to paper maps and worth the money?
Using a DM package
Locating Places
Printing Maps
Route Planning
Visualising a Route
- height profiles
- virtual landscapes
- 3D walk-throughs
Printing Route Cards
Downloading Routes to a GPS
Using digital maps on a Pocket PC, PDA or Smartphone
Which Package?
The main suppliers of DM packages in the UK are Anquet Maps Ltd (see here) and Memory-Map (see here) - both of which source their data from the UK's Ordnance Survey (see here). Harvey Maps (see here) also make available some digital maps.
