NYM National Park Volunteers' Day

This year is the 40th anniversary of the Cleveland Way (CW) - a national long distance walk (109 miles) running from Filey to Helmsley via Saltburn.

Click here for more details on the CW.

On Thursday, 21st May, 14 members of the Stockton Rambling Club participated in a North York Moors National Park volunteers' day.

The labours of those who attended the event were directed at repairing some of the CW long distance path on Coate Moor - just to the east of Captain Cook's monument (see the picture below).

The work of the SRC team was supervised by two NYM rangers (Andrew and Steven). The section of the CW that was being repaired was that near {NZ 595 102} - see the followingmap section:

On behalf of all those walkers who use the section of the Cleveland Way between Gribdale Gate and Kildale, many thanks for your (the volunteers) sterling efforts in relation to keeping the terrain under-foot in a reasonable condition.

The Cleveland Way is one I did in May 1983, not with the SRC. But on my own, super walk. I've just completed my Coast to Coast last week and hoping to do the Pennine Way next year, last time did that was in July 1971.

Hello Marti. Good to hear from you. Pleased to read that you completed the 'Coast to Coast' successfully. What was the weather like? We had some rather mixed days here - ranging from tropical heat through (almost) gale force winds to terrential rain. I hope you didn'y get any of what we got - apart from the sun! regards ... PB

Hi Phil, Well the weather was in the Lakes, for the first 4 days, suuny & warm. Kirkby Stephen to Keld was wet and hill mist, not the best day for the Nine Standards. Then a mixture of sunshine & showers, otherwise the weather was most kind to us. I will send you a few photos via email next week sometime....Regards Marti

Hello Martin. Yes, you seem to have had some quite mixed weather. I have memories of Nine Standards Rigg in the mist - this was the reason why I bought my first GPS navigator. I look forward to seeing some of your photographs of the 'coast-to-coast'. We are off to Rothbury tomorrow - should be a good day out.
