Despite the atrocious conditions under foot, what a great day we all had today. What a splendid walk we had! There were six of us on the A-walk: PB, RB, KF, CH, JY and PY. PB led the walk.

We set off from Scaling Dam (east car park) at about 10.30 am and headed in a southerly direction across Roxby High Moor, Black Dike Moor and Lealholm Moor in order to reach Brown Rigg End. There was lots of deep snow, ice and water on the moors that we crossed - all of which reduced our walking pace quite considerably. One of the big problems with snow, of course, is that it is not possible to see what is underneath it. This meant that we had to be very cautious and walk at a slightly slower pace than we would normally do - on times, feeling our way with our walking poles.

From Brown Rigg End we dropped down to High Walls Farm where we picked up an interesting sequence of paths that took us in an easterly direction (pass Park Wood) to Lealholm Side - where we stopped for lunch. We managed to get some shelter from the wind behind a row of gorse bushes and an embankment to the nearby road.

After lunch we headed north to Green Houses and then followed a sequence of paths that took us on a north-easterly trek to Woodhill House, Traveller’s Rest Farm and Ugthorpe. From here we headed north to Mickelby. We had a short ‘drink stop’ here - before pushing on (still on a northerly bearing) to reach Westfields Farm and the coast at Runswick Sands. The very steep descent onto the beach at Runswick was really treacherous. Most of us slipped or fell over because of the mud and general wetness of everything.

Following a short, but pleasant walk along the beach, we had a good climb up the road out of Runswick Bay - at the top of which we ‘picked up’ the Cleveland Way (CW). We followed this in a northerly direction to Port Mulgrave. Because we were ‘running’ a little late according to our schedule, we left the CW at Port Mulgrave and headed north over the (very muddy) fields to Cliff Farm and onwards to Staithes.

We arrived back at our coach at 16.45. Because of the terrible conditions underfoot, we were about 15 minutes late. But, what a really tremendous day we had!
