A-Walking: Osmotherley to Sutton Bank via Arden Hall
Our three walks on Sunday, 20th October, each took place in the
south-western region of the North York Moors. The A-Walk started from Osmotherley, the B-walk commenced at Sutton-under-Whitestonecliffe and the C-Walk followed a circular route from Sutton Bank. All of the walks finished at the Visitors' Centre at Sutton Bank.
The A-Walk was led by Jeff Hunt - pictured below. There were seven walkers in the group. The route covered a distance of 15.8 miles and took in Oak Dale, Square Corner, Thorodale, Arden Hall, Delicar Bridge and Cold Kirby.
From our drop-off location in the centre of Osmotherley we followed the Cleveland
Way (CW) in an easterly direction through Oak Dale and up to Square Corner. From the car park, we continued along the CW in a southerley direction until we reached the footpath junction at {SE 491 922}. Taking the path on our left, we made our way in an easterly direction towards Harker Yates Ridge and then descended into Thorodale. Continuing in an easterly direction we made our way towards North Moor Wood where we stopped for lunch.
After lunch, we made our way to Arden Hall and then
circled around the southern side of Coomb Hill in order to reach Church Bridge. We followed the road in a southerly direction in order to get to Delicar Bridge and then headed south across the fields to Sunnybank Farm and Dale Town. We then had a good climb in order to reach the road junction near Murton Grange. Continuing our southerly trek, we made our way to Murton Woods and our tea-stop location at {SE 532 866}.
Leaving the tea-stop location, we continued on our southerly bearing until we reached
Cold Kirby. From here we followed a good track (Cote Moor Road) until we reached the A170 road near the Hambleton Inn. After a short walk along the road, we went along a good track through Kilburn Moor
Plantation and then made our way north towards the Visitors' Centre at Sutton Bank - where the walk ended.
Many thanks to Jeff for leading the walk.

During the weekend of 4th-6th October, Stockton Rambling Club organised no fewer than eight walks in the Shap area of Cumbria. As part of the SRC Walking Weekend, four walks were held on Saturday while the other four took place on Sunday.
The two A-Walks were led by Jane Thompson (Saturday) and Phil Barker (Sunday). The two leaders are pictured below. Each of the walks covered a distance of 12.5 miles and both incurred about 3000 feet of ascent.
Jane's walk followed an easterly anticlockwise route from Low Borrow Bridge and finished at the lovely village of Orton. The route took in a delightful section of the north-western Howgill Fells and included Carlin Gill, Black Force, Blakethwaite Stone, Docker Knott, Bleagill Head, Simon's Seat, Middleton, Langdale Beck and Raisgill Hall.
Phil's route also started from Low Borrow Bridge. However, his route went in a westerly clockwise direction towards Borrowdale and finished back at our base-camp at the Shap Wells Hotel. Phil's route took in Borrowdale Wood, Whinfell Beacon, Old High, Mabbin Crag, Ashstead Fell, Borrowdale Beck,
Breast High, Bretherdale Head, Greenholme, Scout Green and Salterwath.
Over the weekend we had quite mixed weather. On Saturday's walk the conditions were good and we had some fantastic views of the Howgills. However, on Sunday we had lots of mist and rain and the visibility on the high ground was minimal. Nevertheless, we had some great walks.

A-Walking: Birk Brow to Danby Lodge via Commondale
Each of our three walks on Sunday, 29th September, took place in the Esk Dale
area of the North York Moors. The A-walk started at Birk Brow while the B-Walk and C-walk set off from Slapewath and Charltons, respectively. All of the walks finished at the Moors Centre in Danby.
The A-Walk was led by Jeff Hunt (pictured below). There were seven walkers in the
group. Jeff's route took in Stanghow Moor, High Moor, Westworth Wood, Guisborough Woods, North Ings Moor, Commondale, Castleton, Danby Park, Rosedale Intake, Clitherbeck, Castleton Pits and the Moors Centre. The walk covered a distance of 14.5 miles and involved a total ascent of 1200 feet.
From our drop-off location in the car park at Birk Brow {NZ 658 148}, we took a southerly bearing in order to reach Woodhill Gill Head. From here we continued south over Stanghow Moor along the Quakers' Causeway to arrive at the track junction at {NZ 659 129}. Now turning onto a north-westerly bearing, we made our way to Westworth Wood where we had a short drink-stop.
Maintaining our easterly bearing we walked through a section of Guisborough Woods and then turned onto a southerly bearing at {NZ 624 141}. As we approached Penrod Hill we changed our direction slightly, to a south-easterly bearing, and maintained this until we reached the small village of Commondale - where we stopped for lunch.
After our lunch-stop, we continued on our south-easterly bearing until we arrived at the minor road near Castleton. Now changing to an easterly bearing we walked along a good track to Danby Park where we joined the Pannierman's Causeway. This took us in a north-easterly direction to Clitherbeck Farm. We circled around the farm and stopped for a short tea-break on the open moorland near Castleton Pits {NZ 720 099}.
Following our tea-stop, we made our way to the minor road at {NZ 726 087} near Danby Beacon. Turning right along this road, we descended in a southerly, come westerly, direction in order to arrive at the Danby Moors Centre - where our expedition ended.
Many thanks to Jeff for leading the walk.
