A-Walking: from Chop Gate to Ingleby Cross

Our three walks on Sunday, 11th November all started at Chop Gate and finished in Ingleby Cross. The A-walk was led by Jeff Hunt (pictured below). There were seven members in the group.
Jeff Hunt - A-Walk leader

From our starting location near the Village Hall we had a muddy climb up to the south-going footpath at {SE 556 991}. From here we headed south down Bilsdale to reach Orterly Farms, Low Crookleith Farm, Low Crookleith Farm, Beacon Guest, Stable Home, Low Mill and Fangdale Beck.

At Fangdale Beck we changed to a westerly bearing and followed a public footpath that took us up onto Limestone Ridge. As we climbed, we had some good views of Bilsdale Transmitting Station on our right. We continued our westerly trek until we reached a track junction at {SE 547 952}. Now changing to a south-westerly bearing, we made our way to Low Thwaites, Blow Gill and Lane House - where we had a short lunch-stop.

From our lunch-stop location, we headed south along a minor road to reach a public footpath at {SE 528 931}. We followed this towards Cow Wath and then travelled in a north-westerly direction to reach Far House, Lower Locker Farm, Dale Head and the minor road at {SE 488 955} - near Robinson's Cross.

Continuing our north-westerly trek, we made our way to Corner Square where we joined the Cleveland Way (CW) long-distance footpath. We followed this in a westerly direction through Oak Dale in order to reach Osmotherley. We stopped here for a quick cup-of-tea before continuing along the CW to its junction with the Coast-to-Coast (C2C) long-distance path at {SE 454 986}. Now following the route of the C2C, we made our way through South Wood to Park House, Arncliffe Hall and the A172 road at {NZ 450 005}. After crossing this road, our route led us to the Blue Bell Inn in Ingleby Cross where our coach was waiting to transport us home.

 Walking the Berwickshire Coastal Path

The original route of the Berwickshire Coastal Path (BCP) ran between Berwick-upon-Tweed and Coldingham and took in St Abbs, Eyemouth and Burnmouth - a distance of 17 miles. The route has recently been extended in a northerly direction to take in St Abb's Head and Pease Bay. Now covering a distance of 28 miles, the new route finishes in Cockburnspath and links up with the Southern Upland Way.

Some years ago (in August, 2005), I followed the route of the original BCP in a south-to-north direction - after a climb up Ben Nevis two days previously! More recently (October, 2012), Jane and I did the route in the opposite direction - starting in Coldingham and finishing in Berwick-upon-Tweed.

Although the weather was not quite as nice as it was on my summer (August) expedition, the winter (October) trek was extremely enjoyable - but, in some places, a little muddy under-foot. The weather was kind to us (it didn't really rain - just a bit at the start!) and the scenery was spectacular. What an experience! We hope to return next summer and do the complete new 28-mile route from Berwick to Cockburnspath.
