A-Walking: Osmotherley Circular via Swainby

Our three walks on Sunday, 24th November, each followed circular routes from Osmotherley. The A-Walk was led by Jane Thompson - pictured below. There were five walkers in the group. Jane's route covered a distance of 14 miles and took in Thimbleby, Foxton Mill, Sandpit Lane, Thimbleby Bank, Big Wood, Oak Dale, Square Corner, Miley Pike, Swainby Shooting House, Stony Ridge, Swainby, Scarth Wood Farm and Tire Bank.
Jane Thompson - A-Walk leader

This walk was previously scheduled to run in November, 2012 but was cancelled because there were not enough people on the coach. When we did the pre-walk check (PWC) for this event, we parked in Swainby and then did an anticlockwise trek - south to Osmotherley and Thimbleby and back via the shooting house. Click here to see the photos that we took on the PWC in November 2012.

Essentially, today's walk followed the same circular route as we did during the PWC. However, it started and finished in Osmotherley instead of Swainby. We had a great lunch-stop at Swainby Shooting House - where we met up with the C-Walkers. Our tea-stop took place near Tire Bank in South Wood.

On finishing the walk we had a wonderful pot of tea in The Coffee Pot in Osmotherley.

Many thanks to Jane for leading a great walk.

A-Walking: Stainton Bank to Barnard Castle via Woolly Hill

Our three walks on Sunday, 17th November, each took place in the Teesdale area of County Durham. The A-Walk started at Stainton Bank on the A688 road (near Stainton Grove) and finished in Barnard Castle. The B-Walk and C-Walk each took the form of circular treks that started and finished in Barnard Castle.

The A-Walk was led by Phil Barker - pictured below. Due to a number of other walking activities that were taking place, there were just two walkers in the group - Phil and Jane! The route covered a distance of 16.5 miles and took in Stainton, Streatlam Grange, Spring Gardens, Chapel House, Beckside, East House, Langleydale Common, Dale Terrace, Woolly Hills, Nemour Hill, Hill Top, Eggleston, Barnley, Cotherstone Crag and Tees Bank.
Phil Barker - A-Walk leader

Leaving our drop-off location on the A688 road, we headed north across the fields to the small village of Stainton. Continuing on a northerly bearing we then made our way to Streatlam Grange. From here we navigated a route via Spring Gardens and Hillingdon to the road junction at Chapel House on the B6279 road. We now followed Sadler Lane in a northerly direction until we reached Beckside. At this point we changed to a north-westerly bearing and headed across the fields to reach East House and Billy Lane. Turning right along the lane, we followed this to its junction with the B6282 road on Langleydale Common. We now followed the B6282 road in an easterly direction to the road bridge near Dale Terrace. Just after the road bridge we turned left onto a farm track and followed this in a westerly direction up pass the farm on Woolly Hill and onwards to our lunch-stop location near Coldthorn Nook.

After our short lunch-break, we continued on a westerly bearing until we reached Nemour Hill and then descended from the moorland terrain down into Teesdale - arriving at Hill Top and then Eggleston where we crossed the A6282 road near its junction with the A6821. From here we followed a south-easterly path to West Barnley and then East Barnley. We now joined the route of the Teesdale Way long-distance footpath. We followed this in a southerly direction towards Shipley Wood and Cotherstone Crag. Staying with the Teesdale Way, we now followed the route of the River Tees until we reached West Holme House, East Holme House, Tees Bank and, finally, our destination in Barnard Castle.

As we arrived back in good time, we were able to partake of a very welcome cup-of-tea in the No 3 Cafe in Calgate before heading home on the coach.

From our drop-off location at the village hall in Chop Gate, we headed south along the east side of Bilsdale - walking roughly parallel with the B1257 road which runs through the dale. When we reached the northern extremity of Roppa Wood we turned onto an easterly bearing and made our way to East Moor Wood - where we stopped for lunch.

Continuing on a south-easterly bearing we passed through Howl Wood Farm and then navigated a route to Hasty Bank Farm. A-Walking: Fir Tree to Wolsingham via Salter's Gate

Our three walks on Sunday, 27th October, each took place in the Weardale area of County Durham. The A-Walk set off from near Fir Tree while both the B-Walk and C-Walk each started at Tow Law. All of the walks finished in Wolsingham. We set off in very inclement weather conditions - lots of heavy rain and very strong winds. Apart from odd breaks in the prevailing weather, these conditions stayed with us throughout the day.

The A-Walk was led by Phil Barker - pictured below. There were five walkers in the group the distance covered was 15.4 miles. Although the weather was bad, we still had some spectacular views.
Phil Barker - A-Walk leader

From our drop-off location on the A68 road, just west of Fir Tree, we located a public footpath at {NZ 134 350} that took us in a south-westerly direction to Black Hall and the Weardale Way. Following this in a northerly direction, we passed through Low Harperley, Eels Bridge and Old Park - where we left the Weardale Way. At this point we headed north to the small village of Thornley. After passing through the village we took a westerly bearing that took us to Snipe Gate and Greenwell Hill. Continuing in a north-westerly direction along the high-ground, we made our way to the B6296 road at {NZ 088 381} near Redgate Head. From here we made our way to Castle Hills and stopped just afterwards for a short lunch-stop at {NZ 087 391}.

After lunch we made our way north to Redmires and continued over Wolsingham North Moor thereby making our way to the dismantled railway track at {NZ 098 409} near Greenfield Cottage. We then followed a north-westerly bearing in order to reach Salter's Gate. From here we made our way in a southerly direction to a point just south of Nine Acre Plantation {NZ 075 408} where we took a westerly-going path. This took us on a nice down-hill trek to reach the dam wall at Tunstall Reservoir {NZ 063 407}. We stopped here for a short tea-break.

Leaving the tea-stop location on a south-westerly bearing, we navigated a route to High Jofless and the old ruined building at Park Wall. From here we had a steady down-hill trek in a south-easterly direction in order to reach our destination in Wolsingham.

Many thanks to Phil for leading a splendid walk.
