Our walks on Sunday, 20th May, all took place in the Garsdale/Dentdale areas. Each of the walks finished in the delightful town of Sedbergh. The A-Walk was led by Phil Barker (pictured below).
We set off from Dandra Garth (on the A684 road) at about 11:11 am. The initial part of our route began with a steep climb in a south-easterly direction up onto Peggy's Hill. From here we descended on a southerly bearing to the small village of Cowshill (where we crossed the River Dee) and then picked up the route of the Dales Way long-distance footpath.
We followed the route of the Dales Way until we reached Woman's Land. At this point we turned onto a south-westerly bearing and navigated a route to the stepping stones at {SD 724 849} where we crossed Deepdale Beck.
After the second (and final) major climb from Scow up along Nun House Outrake, we turned right into Green Lane - the highest point on the walk. Following this track in a westerly direction, we passed through South Lord's Land to arrive at a minor road - Barbondale Road. We left the road at {SD 683 864} and continued our descent from the high ground to arrive at Delicar.
We crossed back over the River Dee at Ellers and then re-joined the Dales Way at Gap {SD 667 900}. Following the long-distance path, in a north-westerly direction, we passed through Millthrop to reach Birks House. From here, a short north-easterly trek across the fields took us to our final destination in Sedbergh.

Our walks on Sunday, 13th May, were all 'local' walks on the North York Moors - each one finishing in Sleights.
The A-Walk was led by the Club Chairman - Bill McTimoney (pictured below).
We set off from Scaling Dam (on the A171 road) at about 10:03 am. The initial part of our route took us north to the small village of Scaling and then, in an easterly direction, across Roxby Moor towards Newton Bank {NZ 781 141}. From here, we descended in a northerly direction to Newton Mulgrave and Hinderwell.
Leaving Hinderwell in an easterly direction along the road (Runswick Lane), our route now took us to
Runswick Bank Top. We now made a steep descent down into Runswick Bay where we stopped for a delightful lunch-stop - sitting in the glorious sunshine watching the sea.
After lunch we walked across Runswick Sands towards Hob Holes where we
re-joined the Cleveland Way (CW) long-distance footpath. We followed this in an easterly directon - making our way to Kettleness and Sandsend.
Leaving the CW at Sandsend, we climbed up the road towards Raven Hill Farm and then followed the public footpaths in a southerly direction to Raithwaite. Just after passing The Lake (on our left), we took a short tea-stop in a grassy field at {NZ 867 112}.
Continuing in a southerly direction, the final part of our route took us to Newholm and Aislaby. Following our descent into Sleights, we had a short social gathering in the local hostelry
(The Salmon Leap) before boarding our coach for the trip home.
A big 'thank you' to Bill for providing us with such an interesting day out - which took in some of the most scenic
parts of the coastal region of the North York Moors.

On Sunday, 6th May, Stockton Rambling Club had three walks in the Wensleydale area of North Yorkshire. All walks finished in Askrigg. The A-walk was enthusiastically led by Jane Thompson (see picture below).
From our drop-off point on the A684 road near Lords Bridge, our route took us in a southerly direction along Bay Bolton Avenue to reach the first climb of the day at Capple Bank. This took us up onto a minor road near The Gallops. We followed this road in a westerly direction towards Penhill Farm where we turned left. After 500 yards, at {SE 067 869}, we left the road on a westerly bearing.
Following our ascent and descent of Penhill, we made our way to the village of West Burton. From here we took a north-westerly bearing across Bishopdale to arrive in Wensleydale where we crossed the River Ure at Yore Bridge.
After a short 'icecream stop' at Yore Bridge, we continued on a westerly bearing (292°), now following the course of the River Ure until we reached Worton Bridge where we turned south and crossed the river again. From the small village of Worton we headed west - passing Worton Scar and Brough Scar - in order to reach Bainbridge.
Leaving Bainbridge in a northerly direction, we crossed the River Ure for a third time. Now making our way in an easterly direction our route took us to Abbey Head and, finally, the village of Askrigg - where our expedition ended.
During our six-hour trek, we covered a distance of 16 miles with an ascent of 2600 feet. Many thanks to Jane for such a splendid day.

Despite the variable weather conditions, the SRC weekend in
Cleator seemed to be an outstanding success. Saturday's walks took the form of circular routes from Nether Wasdale while the Sunday expeditions (again, circular routes) all set off from Ennerdale Bridge.
Saturday's A-walk was expertly led by Jeff Hunt (see the picture below). There were fourteeen people in the group and the weather was ideal for steep climbing.
Our route took in Whin Rigg and
Illgill Head. After our lunch stop near
Burnmoor Tarn, we made our way to Miterdale. Then, following a delightful tea-stop
near Irton Fell, we made our way back to our
starting point at Nether Wasdale.
Sunday's A-walk was superbly led by Roger Blacklock (see the picture below). There were eight people in the group. Unfortunately, today's weather was markedly different from that which we experienced yesterday.
Because of the high wind velocities that we were exposed to, the original route that we had planned to do had to be modified in order to reduce the risk of being blown over. Our amended route took in Whins,
White Oak, Gavel Fell and Cogra Moss. We took our lunch-stop in the shelter of the trees beneath Lamplugh Fell. After passing through Felldyke and Kirkland, we had a short tea-stop in a disused quarry that was located just to the north-west of High Stowbank. After crossing the River Ehen, we followed the river bank back towards the pub in Ennerdale
Bridge.
Monday's 'bonus walk': sadly, the majority of people who attended the Club weekend had to return home on Sunday night. However, Jane and Phil were lucky enough to be able to stay an extra night. On Monday, would you believe, the weather was superb and so we decided to do an 'unplanned' walk around Ennerdale Water. We followed a similar route to that which the C-Group took on Sunday.
