Our three walks on Sunday, 9th September, each took place in the Howgill Fells area of east Cumbria. The A-walk started from Ash Fell on the A685 road; the B-walk commenced at Newbiggin-on-Lune; and the C-walk set off from Ravenstonedale. All walks finished in Sedbergh.
The A-walk was led by Phil Barker (pictured below). There were six people in the group.
During the initial part of the walk we followed a westerly bearing - dropping down to Ravenstonedale and then making our way to Coldbeck and Will Hill. From here we continued our westerly trek to reach Weasdale and Scar Sikes. At this point we changed direction and headed north to Brow Foot.
At Brow Foot we changed to a south-westerly bearing and headed for Bowderdale Foot where our route now took us in a southerly direction towards West Fell. We commenced our ascent of the fell and then had a short lunch-stop at {NY 667 031}. There were some wonderful views both to the north and east of us.
From the lunch-stop location, we continued our climb up onto the top of West Fell. As we walked south towards Hazelgill Knott we had some superb views of the Howgill Fells. Indeed, seeing Green Bell, Randygill Top, Kensgriff and Yarlside on our left brought back some great memories of previous walks in this area - particularly our gruelling ascent of Yarlside a few years ago.
We continued our southerly trek and after visiting The Calf, Calders and Winder we dropped down from the high ground in order to reach Howgill Lane at {SD 641 929}. From here, we walked along the road in an easterly direction - passing Lockbank Farm on our left - thereby making our way to our final destination in the centre of Sedbergh.

Our three walks on Sunday, 2nd September, each took place in the Ilkley Moor area of North Yorkshire. All of the walks started near Pool on Leeds Road (SE 229 446) and finished at the railway station in the centre of Ilkley.
The A-Walk was enthusiastically and expertly led by Bill McTimoney (pictured below). There were thirteen members in the group.
Our route covered a distance of 15.4 miles and took us in a westerly direction from the A660(T) road (Leeds Road) along the Ebor Way and Dales Way Link through the Chevin Forest Park and across The Chevin. From here, we had some good views of Otley.
At Westfield Farm we turned south and crossed Guiseley Moor. After skirting around the north-western edge of Guiseley, we continued in a westerly direction to reach Bingley Road and, from there, we made our way to Little
London.
Now turning onto a north-westerly bearing, we crossed Bingley Moor and Burley Moor and then joined the route of the Dales Way Link at {SE 125 450}. Continuing in a northerly direction, we made our way to the Twelve Apostles Stone Circle - where we had a very pleasant tea-stop and some wonderful views.
Continuing north from the tea-stop location, we walked across Ilkley Moor until we reached Gill Head {SE 123 459}. We now moved in a north-easterly direction in order to reach the Cow and Calf rocks. At this point, after admiring the views, the group split into two. One group made its descent directly down from the high ground into the town of Ilkley. The other group headed west to reach Heber's Ghyll before making its descent.
Overall, we had a fantastic walking day - good weather and some wonderful scenery. Many thanks to Bill for organising such a splendid walk and a great day out in an area that we do not often visit.

Our three walks on Sunday, 26th August, each took place in the Hadrian's Wall area of Northumberland. All of the walks started at Brocolitia and finished at Housesteads.
The A-Walk covered a distance of 16.3 miles and was led by Phil Barker (pictured below). There were just four members in the group.
After visiting the Temple of Mithras at Brocolitia, the group headed north along a very muddy and often water-logged path to reach the road (Ward Lane) at {NY 844 751}. From here we followed a good track to reach Low Moralee Farm {NY 848 761}.
In order to get to our lunch-stop destination at Wark, we needed to cross Warks Burn using the ford at {NY 853 765}. Unfortunately, because of the recent heavy rainfall, the water-level at the ford was very high and we were unable to cross the river at this point - despite the previous effort that we (Jane and Phil) had put in to building some stepping stones on a recent earlier visit (see the 'flash back' photos located here).
Fortunately for today's group, we were able to 'shimmy' across a fallen-down tree that conveniently straddled the river at a point just west of where we had intended to cross at the ford. After successfully negotiating the swollen river, we had a pleasant lunch-stop in Wark - sitting on the bank of the River North Tyne {NY 861 769}.
After our lunch-stop we made our way in a westerly direction - passing through
Woodley Shield, Ramshaws Mill and Longlee - to reach the Pennine Way at {NY 811 767} on Longlee Rigg. Interestingly, as we went west across the Rigg, we sighted a heron near Fawlee Sike.
Having reached the Pennine Way, we followed its muddy and water-logged route in a southerly direction to reach Ladyhill and Cragend - where we had some good views of Greenlee Lough. We then made our way towards Housestead Crags {NY 785 686} where we were able to walk along a section of Hadrian's Wall. This gave us some excellent views of Ridley Common and Broomlee Lough on our left.
Leaving the Wall, we made our way to the visitors' centre at Housesteads. Before boarding our coach to go home, we had a little time to partake of some light refreshments - which were very welcome after our arduous trek along the Pennine Way.
