Our three walks on Sunday, 19th May, each took place in the Danby area of the North York Moors. The A-Walk started from Birk Brow car park, the B-Walk started nearby at Brown Hill and the C-Walk comenced at Castleton Rigg. All of the walks finished in Rosedale Abbey.
The A-Walk was led by Jane Thompson (pictured below). Jane's route took us on a linear southerly trek over a section of the north-eastern area of the North York Moors. There were six walkers in the group and we covered a distance of 16.6 miles.
After leaving our drop-off location, we made our way over Stanghow Moor and High Moor (using the Quakers' Causeway) in order to reach Brown Hill. We then dropped down (via Sand Hill) to Moorside and Box Hall. Continuing on a south-easterly bearing, we reached the Castleton road at {NZ 681 087}. From here we followed a good track in an easterly direction to reach the village of Danby.
Leaving Danby on a southerly bearing, we climbed up-hill to Ainthorpe and stopped near the Fox & Hounds hostelry for a short lunch-break.
After completing our ascent onto Ainthorpe Rigg, we made our way in a southerly direction to Pinder Howe, Wolf Pit and Trough House - where we had a short tea-stop.
From the tea-stop location, we navigated a route that took us to Seavey Hill and Sturdy Bank. We then had to make quite a steep descent in order to reach the dismantled railway track near Nab Scar. Turning left, we now followed the route of the old railway in a southerly direction until we reached Hill Cottages.
Continuing down-hill from Hill Cottages, our route now took us to the foot-bridge near Low Thorgill Farm. From here we had a pleasant trek (in a south-easterly direction) in order to reach our final destination in Rosedale Abbey.

As was the case last year
(see here), our second visit to Lancashire (on the weekend of 10th May) was a tremendous success. Apart from the weather conditions, we had some superb walks in the Haslingden area (on Saturday) and the Darwen area (on Sunday).
On Saturday we had three circular walks from Leys End
(commencing at the Duke of Wellington hostelry) {SD 766 229} while on Sunday we had three circular treks from Abbey Village (starting from the Hare and Hounds hostelry) {SD 643 223}.
A selection of some of the photos that we took during the weekend's walking expeditions can be seen by clicking on the pink buttons below:
Some of the photographs shown in the SRC May 2013 Lancashire collection were taken from the pre-walk checks that were undertaken earlier in the year (see here).

Our three walks on Sunday, 5th May, each took place in the Wensleydale area of North Yorkshire. The A-Walk started in Hawes, the B-Walk started nearby in Hardraw and the C-Walk comenced at the Moorcock Inn.
The A-Walk was led by Jane Thompson (pictured below). Jane's route took us on an anti-clockwise circular trek from Hawes. There were seven walkers in the group and we covered a distance of 14.6 miles.
After leaving our drop-off location in Hawes we made our way north to Sedbusk and North Rakes Hill (1730 feet). From here we followed a good track in a north westerly direction to reach Shivery Gill. We stopped for lunch at some rocks (High Millstones) on the west side of Abbotside Common. Continuing north, we next made our way across boggy moorland in order to reach Lovely Seat (2235 feet).
We descended from Lovely Seat on a north-westerly bearing to reach the cattle grid on the minor road at {SD 867 955}. From here, our final climb took us up to Little Shunner Fell (2140 feet) and onwards to Great Shunner Fell (2360 feet). We stopped here for a short
tea-break and then followed the route of the Pennine Way in a southerly direction. This took us to Hearne Head, Hearne Top and Hardraw. We then had a pleasant walk across the fields back to Hawes.
Unfortunately, much of today's A-Walk was over wet, boggy moorland. Also, because most of the walk took place in misty conditions (due to low-lying cloud) we did not see any of the magificent views we might otherwise have experienced had the weather and visibility been better.
Because we did not get very many good views today, the photographs that we took have been augmented by those that were taken when we did the pre-walk check. Click on the following button to see the photographs.
