A-Walking: Gunnerside to Reeth via Swinner Gill

Our four walks on Sunday, 21st July, each took place in the Swaledale area of North Yorkshire. The A-Walk, B-Walk and C-Walk all started in Gunnerside while the additional D-Walk set off from Reeth. All of the walks finished in Reeth. Following the walking activities members of the Club enjoyed a meal in the Buck Hotel.

The A-Walk was led by Jane Thompson - pictured below. There were five walkers in the group; the distance covered was 13.9 miles.
Jane Thompson - A-Walk leader
From our drop-off point in Gunnerside, we followed a westerly-going path that took us to Ivelet, Calvert Houses and Ramp Holme Farm. We had some good views of the River Swale as we made our way in the direction of Muker - and on our subsequent northerly trek to Swinner Gill Lead Mines. We stopped here for a short lunch-break and to take in the spectacular views.

From the lead mines we climbed up along East Grain in order to reach the high ground near Lownathwaite. Still maintaining our easterly bearing, we descended down to the ruins of the old mines at the confluence of Blind Gill and Gunnerside Gill. Our next climb took us up over the harsh, rocky terrain at Friarfold Hush in order to reach the Old Gang Mines and Level House Bridge. At this point, we changed to a south-easterly bearing and walked along a good track that took us to Surrender Bridge.

We stopped just after the old smelting mill (near Cringley Bottom) for a short tea-stop and then continued our south-easterly trek. Following the route of Barney Beck, we made our way to Thiernswood Hall and Healaugh. After passing through the village, we turned right and descended down to the northern bank of the River Swale. From here we walked in an easterly direction in order to reach our final destination in Reeth.

Many thanks to Jane for leading a splendid walk.

A-Walking: Horton-in-Ribblesdale to Settle

On Sunday, the 7th July, Stockton Rambling Club had three works in the Ribblesdale area of North Yorkshire. All of the walks started in Horton-in-Ribblesdale and finished in Settle.

The A-Walk was led by Peter Cull (pictured below). There were nine walkers in the group. Peter's route covered a distance of 13.1 miles and included ascents of Plover Hill and Pen-y-Ghent.
Peter Cull - A-Walk leader
Following the route of the Pennine Way, we left Horton-in-Ribblesdale on a north-easterly bearing - making our way towards Horton Scar. We left the Pennine Way at {SD 823 742} and continued our north-easterly trek over Horton Moor until we reached a path junction at {SD 845 761} on Foxup Moor. At this point we turned onto a south-easterly bearing and began our ascent of Plover Hill (2222 feet). We stopped on the top for a short lunch-break.

After an enjoyable lunch-stop, we made our way south in order to reach the summit of Pen-y-Ghent (2264 feet). Because the visibility was so good, we had some tremendous views from here.

Following our descent from the high ground, we continued our southerly trek (following the route of the Pennine Way) until we reached Churn Milk Hole. Leaving the Pennine Way, we continued south to Moor Head Lane {SD 8254 691} in order to join the route of the Ribble Way. We followed this south to the small village of Stainforth - where we caught up with (and over-took) the B-Group walkers.

We now made our way to the B6479 road and continued in a southerly direction to find a path (on our left) that took us beneath Stainforth Scar. This path eventually led us into the village of Langcliffe where we re-joined the B6479 road. At {SD 820 647} we took a minor road on our left and followed this to Castlebergh Plantation. At this point we turned onto a westerly bearing and dropped down into the centre of Settle.

A-Walking: Cow Green Reservoir to Middleton-in-Teesdale

Our three walks on Sunday, 30th June, each took place in the Teesdale area of County Durham. The A-Walk started from the car park at Cow Green Reservoir, the B-Walk commenced at Hanging Shaw while the C-Walk set-off from Langdon Beck. All walks finished in Middleton-in-Teesdale.

The A-Walk was led by Jane Thompson (pictured below). There were nine walkers in the group. Jane's route took in a section of the Pennine Way, Ettersgill, Coldberry and Hudes Hope. It covered a distance of 14.9 miles.
Jane Thompson - A-Walk leader
After leaving our drop-off location, we headed south to Cauldron Snout where we joined the Pennine Way. We followed this in an easterly direction in order to reach the minor road near Langdon Beck Youth Hostel. From here we navigated a picturesque route to Ettersgill, Ashdub, Broadley's Gate and Moor House.

From Moor House, we had a good climb over moorland terrain in order to reach the high-ground between Lord's Allotment and Coldberry Grains. We had some spectacular views from here - and during our descent into Hudes Hope. There was lots of evidence of the old lead-mining activity to be seen here.

After crossing Hudeshope Beck, we had an easy 'downhill' trek, in a southerly direction, following the route of the beck, to the end of the walk in Middleton-in-Teesdale.
