A-Walking: Stanhope to St John's Chapel via Bolt's Law
Despite the inclement weather on Saturday night and early Sunday morning, our three walks in Weardale on the 18th August went ahead as planned. Both the A-Walk and the B-Walk started in
Stanhope while the C-Walk set off a little further west from Eastgate. All of the walks finished in St John's Chapel.
The A-Walk was led by Jane Thompson - pictured below. There were seven walkers in the
group; the distance covered was 15.2 miles.
From our drop-off point near the Town Hall in Stanhope, we followed a northerly path that took us up along Stanhope Burn. Much to Jane's delight, we sighted two herons wading in, and flying about, the beck. We left Stanhope Burn at its junction with West Whiteley Burn and continued north (on our first climb) to Steward Shield Meadow and onwards to the disused railway track at {NY 983 443} near Meadows Edge. Turning left, we followed the route of the railway in a westerly direction to reach our lunch-stop location at {NY 953 450} - in a sheep-fold near Hope Head.
Following lunch, we made our way up to the trig point and cairn on Bolt's Law. We now followed a south-westerly bearing in order to reach the minor road near Packlet's Gate. After a short spell on the road we turned left onto open moorland and made our way on a south-easterly bearing to reach Rookhope. Leaving Rookhope in a south-westerly direction, we started our second climb. This took us over Lintzgarth Common to Scarsike Head. From here we had a good down-hill section that took us to Middlehope Burn where we stopped for a pleasant tea-stop.
We left the tea-stop location in a southerly direction and followed the route of Middlehope Burn until we reached the village of Westgate. Turning right along the A689 road, we joined the Weardale Way and followed this in a westerly direction in order to reach Daddry Shield and our final destination in St John's Chapel.
Many thanks to Jane for leading a splendid walk.

Our three walks on Sunday, 4th August, each took place in the north-eastern coastal area of Northumberland. All walks finished in Bamburgh. The A-Walk started at Boulmer, the B-Walk set off from Craster while the C-Walk commenced at Newtonbarns.
The A-Walk was led by Phil Barker - pictured below. There were six walkers in the group; the distance covered was 18 miles.
After leaving our drop-off location outside The Fishing Boat Inn in Boulmer, we followed the coastal path in a northerly direction to reach Craster. We stopped here for our lunch-stop and enjoyed some good views of the harbour.
From our lunch-stop location, we continued our northerly trek along the coast. Our route took in Dunstanburgh Castle, Embleton Bay, Low Newton-by-the-Sea and Beadnell Bay. We stopped near Beadnell for a short tea-stop.
Leaving our tea-stop location, we followed a series of field paths that ran in a north-westerly direction to North Sunderland. We then
rejoined the coastal path near St Aidan's Dunes. From here we had some good views of the Farne Islands and a very pleasant walk along the beach in order to reach our final destination in Bamburgh.
Today's walking conditions were superb - plenty of sunshine and lots of gentle cool
breezes. In addition, of course, the coastal scenery was terrific.
Many thanks to Phil for leading the walk.

Despite the torrential down-pour of rain that took place in the early hours of
Sunday morning on the 28th July, our three SRC walks went ahead in the Esk Dale area of the North York
Moors. During the day, the weather was superb - plenty of sunshine and
some gentle breezes to keep us cool. The A-Walk started from the car park on the
A171 near Gerrick Lane, the B-Walk set off from Scaling Dam and the C-Walk followed
a circular route from Egton Bridge. All walks finished in Egton
Bridge.
The A-Walk was led by Phil Barker - pictured below. There were five walkers in the
group; the distance covered was 16.1 miles.
After leaving our drop-off location on the A171 road, we headed south over
Gerrick Moor to Siss Cross and onwards to
Danby. Continuing our southerley trek, we made our
way to Ainthorpe and the trig point on Ainthorpe
Rigg. From here, we maintained our overall southerly bearing - making our way
to Wolf Pit and Trough
House. We stopped here for a short lunch-break.
We left Trough House on an easterly bearing and followed Cut Road (path)
across Glaisdale Moor to reach the minor road near Birk Wath Beck {NZ
729 028}. We then walked along the road in a north-easterly direction until we
arrived at the trig point on Glaisdale Rigg. At this point we left the road
and followed a good track in an easterly direction until we reached Glaisdale. From here, we dropped down to Carr End where we stopped for a short tea-break near
Beggar's Bridge.
The final part of our route involved a pleasant walk through East Arnecliff
Wood towards Delves. From here we followed a
narrow minor road in a down-hill direction until we reached The Horseshoe
Hotel at Egton Bridge. We crossed the River
Esk using two sets of stepping stones near {NZ 801 051} in order to make our
way to our coach which was waiting nearby.
Many thanks to Phil for leading the walk.
