The C-walk will set off from the Hole of Horcum {SE 852 937} and will take in Dunsdale Pond, Levisham Station and Newton.
This is a Route 1 coach pick up (Billingham: 9.30 am, Stockton: 9.45 am and Stockton: 9.30 am).
Our three expeditions this week (Sunday, 20th June) each took place in the Wensleydale area of North Yorkshire. The A-Walk set off from Wensley while the B-Walk and C-Walk both started at Aysgarth.
After leaving Wensley {SE 091 894}, the intent of the A-Walk was to visit West Witton, West Burton, Cote Bridge, Penhill, Bolton Hall and Wensley before arriving at our final destination in Leyburn {SE 111 905}.
We left our drop-off point at about 11.10 am. There were ten people in the group: JB, JPB, PB, RB, MC, CH, KF, CL, AM and LM. MC led the walk.
We set off from Wensley Bridge {SE 091 894} on the A684 road and followed a westerly-going footpath along the bank of the River Ure. We crossed the access road to Bolton Hall at {SE 075 890} and continued on to the path junction at {SE 071 891}. From here we followed a south-westerly path that took us to Back Lane (track). This led us into West Witton {SE 060 884}.
After we passed The Wensleydale Heifer hostelry (see the picture above), we turned left and climbed up towards the entrance to the caravan park at Chantry {SE 054 882}. We now followed Langthwaite Lane (a well-defined track) in a westerly direction to {SE 042 886}. From here we went across the fields, still moving in a westerly direction) and then dropped down to Penhill Preceptory {SE 035 887} where we decided to take a lunch break in the glorious sunshine.
After lunch, we followed a footpath that took us in a south-westerly direction towards West Burton {SE 020 865}. Continuing in a southerly direction we now made our way across the fields to reach the minor road at Cote Bridge {SE 018 856}. Turning left along the road, we followed this for about 200 yards and then turned left off the road in order to commence the major ascent of the day. This involved a steep climb up towards Thupton Gill {SE 024 853}. From here our climb continued in an easterly direction to {SE 033 849} near Harland Hill. At this point, we turned left and headed in a northerly direction towards the Height of Hazely {SE 037 860}.
Turning left, we proceeded on a bearing of 283° to reach the stone boundary wall at {SE 035 860}. We followed this wall in a north-easterly direction to {SE 037 863} where we stopped for a short tea-break. From this location on the north-west side of Penhill, we had some tremendous views of Wensleydale and the surrounding terrain.
After our short break, we continued on our easterly trek - following the stone wall on the north side of Penhill. As we progressed along our route, we passed Black Scar and Penhill Scar on our left. After passing the trig point at {SE 050 867} (see picture below), we continued following the stone wall to {SE 054 865} and then descended from Penhill to reach the minor road at {SE 067 869} where we turned left.
We followed the road in a northerly direction to the road junction near Penhill Farm {SE 067 874} where we turned right along the road. We stayed with the road until we reached a public footpath on our left at {SE 075 874}. At this point we departed from the road and descended from Middleham High Moor towards Capple Bank {SE 075 878}.
We maintained our northerly bearing until we reached Lords Bridge where we crossed the River Ure {SE 075 891}. We now followed the access track towards Bolton Hall {SE 075 896} which we passed on our left.
From the Hall, we had an easterly trek through Wensley Park back to Wensley {SE 091 896} from where we had departed some hours previously. After crossing the A684 road we went along the minor road near the church to reach a lane at {SE 093 895} where we turned left. We followed this uphill for about 170 yards and then turned right onto an easterly-going footpath at {SE 093 896}. This took us across the fields to {SE 098 896}. We now turned onto a north-easterly bearing which we maintained until we arrived at our final destination in Leyburn {SE 111 905}.
Many thanks to MC for organising such an interesting and exciting adventure for us today. We had a really great time. Use the buttons below to see where we went, how we did and some of the photos.

This is a Route 3 coach pick up (Acklam: 9.30 am, Stockton: 9.45 am and Billingham: 10.00 am).
Our three expeditions this week (Sunday, 13th June) each took place in the south-western region of the North York Moors. The A-Walk set off from Helmsley, the B-Walk also started at Helmsley and the C-Walk commenced at Nawton. The final destination of all three walks was Hutton-le-Hole.
After leaving Helmsley {SE 612 838}, the intent of the A-Walk was to visit Riccal Dale, Hasty Bank Farm, Throstle Nest, Ankness Ridge, Otterhills, Grays and Faddell Rigg before arriving at our final destination in Hutton-le-Hole {SE 705 902}.
We left our drop-off point at about 10.55 am. There were eight people in the group: JB, JPB, PB, RB, KF, CL, AM and LM. JB led the walk.
The initial part of this walk was essentially a reversal of the second part of the trek led by RB some weeks ago (see here). However, in order to make the start of today's walk a little different, PB suggested a minor modification that would take in some of the east side of Riccal Dale.
From the church in the centre of the town we set off along the road in an easterly direction to reach the Youth Hostel {SE 615 840}. We maintained our easterly bearing to the gated field-entrance at {SE 620 840}. Now changing to a north-easterly bearing, we made our way through Reagarth Farm {SE 627 845} to reach the western edge of Riccal Dale {SE 630 846}. Turning left, we now followed the field boundary fence in a northerly direction along the edge of the woods to reach Rea Garth Farm {SE 625 857} - see the picture below.
We continued along the track that runs along the edge of Riccal Dale Wood for about 500 yards until we found a path on our right at {SE 622 861}. Taking this path, we made a steep descent in a south-easterly direction through the woods to the footbridge over the River Riccal at {SE 627 859}.
Having crossed the river, we returned to our northerly bearing - climbing up through the woods to reach the eastern edge of the dale at {SE 625 873}. We now followed a good track that went along the eastern edge of Riccal Dale. We stayed with the track until we arrived at a path/track junction at {SE 628 880}. From here we descended through the woods to reach Hasty Bank Farm {SE 625 884}. We continued in a north-westerly direction to Howl Wood Farm {SE 617 892} and onwards to our lunch-stop location at the footbridge over Bonfield Gill at {SE 614 899} - see picture below. We had previously used this spot as a tea-stop on RB's walk in April.
After our lunch stop we resumed our north-westerly trek until we arrived at the path junction at {SE 611 902} near Lund Farm {SE 612 905}. Now switching to a north-easterly bearing, we made our way to Throstle Nest {SE 616 906} and, after a short climb, Birk Nab Farm {SE 621 909}. As we walked north from here, we had some good views of the open moorland to our left - where we had walked some weeks ago with RB.
Just before we reached Hanging Stone, we turned right towards Hagg Common and navigated a route over the moorland in a north-easterly direction towards Cinder Hill {SE 630 924}. We descended from the high ground towards Hodge Beck (see below) only to find that the footbridge across the stream {SE 633 932} was no longer there - having been 'washed away' in the floods of 2005. This now necessitated building a 'river crossing' using appropriate local materials.
From the beck, we zig-zagged up the hill towards the farm track on Ankness Ridge {SE 637 932}. Turning right, we followed this in a southerly direction for about 350 yards to our tea-stop venue {SE 638 929}. After our tea stop, we descended from the ridge in a southerly direction to the ford at Mitchell Hagg Wath {SE 640 918}. We used the ford to cross Hodge Beck (again) and went along its western bank to Otterhills {SE 644 914} where we now used a bridge to cross back to the other side again.
We now followed the single-track access road in a south-westerly direction to Penny Holme {SE 646 911} and onwards to just beyond Cherry Tree Farm {SE 655 901}. At this point we turned left and followed a north-north-easterly bearing along a footpath that took us to the minor road near Grays {SE 665 914}. By now it was raining quite steadily - even the sheep were sheltering from it.
From Grays we made our way to Faddell Rigg {SE 681 909} and the minor road that lay beyond it {SE 682 908}. Turning right at the road, we followed it for about 230 yards and then turned left onto a farm access track at {SE 682 905}. This took us downhill to the Mill {SE 686 904}. After crossing the River Dove using the footbridge at {SE 687 904}, we made an easterly trek pass Grouse Hall {SE 691 906} to reach the minor road at {SE 702 902} - Keld Lane. Turning right, we followed this into Hutton-le-Hole {SE 705 900} where our coach was waiting to take us home.
Many thanks to JB for organising such an interesting and exciting adventure for us today. We had a really great time - we particularly liked the 'river crossing' and the section up the east side of Riccal Dale!
Use the buttons below to see where we went, how we did and view some of photographs.
On Sunday, 20th June, the Stockton Rambling Club will have three walks in the Wensleydale area of North Yorkshire. All walks will finish in Leyburn {SE 111 905} - see the following map.
Crown Copyright (2010). All rights reserved. Licence No. 100046831. Produced using Anquet Maps.
The A-walk will start at Wensley {SE 091 896} and will take in West Witton, Cote Bridge, Penhill, Lords Bridge, and Wensley.
The B-walk will commence at Aysgarth {SE 011 883} and will visit West Burton, Cote Bridge, Penhill, Lords Bridge, and Wensley.
The C-walk will also set off from Aysgarth and will pass by Aysgarth Falls, Castle Bolton, Redmire, Preston-under-Scar and The Shawl.
This is a Route 2 coach pick up (Billingham: 9.30 am, Acklam: 9.45 am and Stockton: 10.00 am).
Our three expeditions this week (Sunday, 6th June) each took place in the Howgill Fells area of Cumbria. The A-Walk set off from near Bridge Cottages on the A683, the B-Walk started at Cross Keys and the C-Walk commenced at Rawthey Bridge.
After leaving the A683 road {SD 716 981}, the intent of the A-Walk was to visit Green Bell, Randygill Top, Yarlside, The Calf, Calders and Winder before arriving at our final destination in Sedbergh {SD 657 921}.
We left our drop-off point at about 11.00 am. There were eleven people in the group: JB, JPB, PB, RB, MC, KF, CH, CL AM, LM and RW. PB led the walk.
From the A683 road we set off along a footpath that led us uphill in a north-north-westerly direction towards Murthwaite {SD 714 986}. We continued in a roughly northerly direction to reach a minor road near Stonely Gill {NY 711 002}. We now climbed up to Grere Fell {NY 702 005} and from there navigated a route up onto Green Bell {NY 699 011} (1976 feet) - see the picture below. At this height, we were now in quite misty conditions - accompanied by light rain. Because of the mist, it would have been quite difficult finding the trig point without a GPS.
We moved off from the trig point on a south-westerly bearing and made our way across Spengill Head {NY 695 007} and Stockless {NY 693 005} before climbing up onto Randygill Top {NY 687 000} (2038 feet). After admiring the view (the mist was now starting to lift), we descended from the high ground in a south-easterly direction - stopping at some peat haggs {SD 690 997} for a short lunch break. From our lunch location we had some good views of Kensgriff - see the picture below.
After lunch we had a gentle climb up onto Kensgriff {SD 688 993} before descending to the Saddle at {SD 687 989}. Another very steep climb now took us up onto Yarlside {SD 685 985} (2090 feet). This was undoubtedly the 'killer-climb' of the day - and involved an almost vertical ascent!
Once we were up on top, we made our way south across Yarlside and then descended in a westerly direction into Bowderdale {SD 681 982}. After crossing Bowderdale Beck we had another hard climb up to the tarn at {SD 671 974} where we stopped for our tea break. By now, the visibility had improved substantially and we were able see The Calf on the horizon to the south-west of our tea-stop location.
Following our short break, we made our way to the trig point on The Calf {SD 667 970} - see the above picture. At about 2220 feet, this was the highest point on our route. From here we made our way on a bearing of 156° over Bram Rigg Top {SD 669 965} to Calders {SD 671 961}.
We descended from Calders in a southerly direction and walked across Rowantree Grains {SD 669 953} in the direction of Arrant Haw. However, our path took us along the east side of the high ground. We were now progressing down-hill towards Winder when we overtook a large group of walkers from York.
At the track junction {SD 658 937}, we decided not to visit the summit of Winder and, instead, took the path to our left which took us down the east side of the hill. We continued in a south-westerly direction along our descent path, eventually arriving at Lockbank Farm (see the picture below) and, beyond it, Howgill Lane {SD 652 923}.
Turning left along Howgill Lane, we followed the road in an easterly direction to the car park in the centre of Sedbergh {SD 659 921} where our coach was waiting to take us back to Teesside.
Despite the weather conditions that we experienced today, we had an interesting and exciting adventure in the Howgill Fells. Use the buttons below to see where we went, how we did and some of the photos

Our three expeditions this week (Sunday, 30th May) each took place in the Whitby area of the North York Moors. The A-Walk set off from Selly Hill, the B-Walk started at Whitby and the C-Walk commenced at Sneaton Corner.
After leaving Selly Hill {NZ 861 095}, the intent of the A-Walk was to visit Sleights, Littlebeck, May Beck, Fylingthorpe, Robin Hood's Bay, Boggle Hole and Home Farm before arriving at our final destination at the Flask Inn {NZ 930 007} on the A171 road.
We left our drop-off point at about 10.50 am. There were eight people in the group: JB, JPB, PB, KF, CH, CL, AM and LM. JB led the walk.
From our starting position on the A171 (Guisborough Road) {NZ 857 093}, we set off in a south-easterly direction along the access track to Selly Cottage {NZ 859 091}. Taking a public footpath to the left of the cottage, we went across the fields to arrive at the small village of Aislaby {NZ 861 087}. Turning left, we walked through the village to reach a footpath on our right at {NZ 862 087}. This took us downhill across the fields to reach the A169 road near Sleights {NZ 866 082}.
We crossed the River Esk using the footbridge at {NZ 868 081} and passed through Sleights railway station. From here we followed a good road/footpath along the west side of Iburndale Beck to reach the village of Iburndale {NZ 872 071}- see the picture below.
After crossing the beck using the road bridge (see above), we continued in a south-south-easterly (SSE) direction to the ford near Throstle Nest Farm {NZ 875 060}. Staying on the east side of Little Beck, we now followed the stream in a southerly direction until we reached the next ford (and footbridge) at {NZ 875 057}. Turning east, we made our way to Low Farm {NZ 876 057} and, on reaching {NZ 877 057}, we then resumed our SSE trek to reach the minor road at {NZ 880 052}. Turning right along the road, we dropped down to Littlebeck {NZ 879 049} - passing by the village hall on our left as we made our descent.
Just after we passed the red postbox near Kelp House, we departed from the road by turning left along a good footpath. This took us in a SSE direction through Scarry Wood to The Hermitage {NZ 885 040} and, subsequently, to Midge Hall {NZ 888 034} where we stopped for lunch.
From our lunch location we made our way through the woods towards the car park near the bridge over May Beck. At {NZ 892 024} we turned onto an east-north-easterly bearing and climbed up to John Cross {NZ 900 026}. Now turning onto a north-north-easterly trek we made our way over Low Moor to join the B1416 road at {NZ 905 039}. We walked east along this road for about 500 yards to reach a footpath on our left at {NZ 909 039}. This took us in a north-easterly direction over Greystone Hills to the road junction at {NZ 922 045} on the A171 road.
After crossing the A171 we took the minor road and followed this into Fylingthorpe {NZ 941 048} and onwards into Robin Hood's Bay {NZ 952 049}. We stopped here and had a very pleasant tea stop overlooking the sea {NZ 953 048}.
We left our tea-stop location by following the route of the Cleveland Way (CW) long-distance footpath along the coast to Boggle Hole {NZ 954 040}. This involved quite a number of ascents and descents in rapid succession. Our final ascent on the CW took us to the minor road near Stoupe Bank Farm {NZ 957 033}. We left the CW at {NZ 959 031} and continued along the road for a further 300 yards to {NZ 959 029}. At this point we took a footpath on our right. This led us into our final major climb of the day: up to Home Farm {NZ 956 026} and, from there, up onto the old dismantled railway track at {NZ 956 025}.
Turning to our right, we went west along the course of the old railway until we reached a road bridge at {NZ 944 026}. Now leaving the railway, we climbed up to the minor road above us; this now took us in a south-westerly direction to Colcroft Farm {NZ 937 021}. From here we followed a footpath that took us through Harry's Folly {NZ 936 017} and across the fields to Low Flask Farm {NZ 930 009} - see the following picture.
Turning left onto the access track to the farm, there was now just a short climb up to the A171 road and, beyond it, the Flask Inn {NZ 930 007} where our expediion terminated.
Many thanks to JB for organising such an interesting and exciting adventure for us today. We had a really great time. Use the buttons below to see where we went, how we did and some of the photographs.
