Wednesday Evening Walking from Saltburn (2012-07-25)
On Wednesday, 25th July, a small group of mid-week walkers met at 7:00 pm in the car park at the Ship Inn for a five-mile circular walk in the Saltburn area. The
route that the ten walkers followed took in Saltburn Gill, Bennison Banks, Brotton, Ings Lane, Hunley Hall golf course and a section of the Cleveland Way. Details of the route can be seen by clicking on the button below.
As we walked in a north-westerly direction along the Cleveland Way (near Hunt Cliff), we had some beautiful views of the coast-line and we also experienced a magnificant sun-set. As the sun appeared to 'sink' into the sea on the horizon, it reminded me of the sinking of the Titanic - as it was depicted in the film starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. What an experience!
After the expedition, members of the group met in the Ship Inn for refreshments before making their way home.
Many thanks to Fiona Taylor for planning and leading the walk.
Some of the photos that we took during the evening's walking expedition can be seen by clicking on the pink button below:

Wednesday Evening Walking from Lord Stones (2012-07-18)
On Wednesday, 18th July, a small group of Stockton Rambling Club members met at 7:00 pm at Lord Stones cafe for a five-mile circular walk around Bilsdale West Moor. The route that the group followed took in Thwaites House, Staindale, Raisdale Mill Plantation, Barker's Crags, Brian's Pond and the dis-used glider station at the top of Carlton Bank. Details of the route can be seen by clicking on the button below.
Although, in places, the route was a little damp underfoot, both the weather and the walking conditions were quite reasonable and there were some good views to be had both from the valley and the high-ground.
Many thanks to Jane and Phil for planning and leading the walk. The actual route taken was one of three different options they had prepared - depending upon the weather conditions the level of water under-foot and who turned out on the day.

Our three walks on Sunday, 15th July, each took place in the Rosedale area of the North York Moors. All of the walks started from and finished at Rosedale Abbey. The A-Walk was expertly led by Peter Gill (pictured below).
From the coach drop-off point in Rosedale Abbey, the A-Group set off in a south-easterly direction along a good track that took us towards Newlands Farm. At {SE 731 945} we turned left onto a north-easterly path that took us over the River Seven, through Yatts Farm and Allotment Farm and then across Hartoft Rigg in order to reach a minor road near Duks Ley Farm.
Turning south along the road, we made our way to Birch Farm and the western edge of Cropton Forest. Continuing on a southerly bearing, we passed St James Farm and continued through the forest in order to reach a track junction at {SE 765 935} on
Muffles Rigg - where we encountered the B-Group. We stopped here for a short lunch-stop.
Leaving the lunch-stop location, we continued in a southerly direction along Sutherland Road until we reached Sutherland Beck. From here our south-westerly route now took us to the northern edge of the village of Cropton. We now had quite a long stretch of road-walking to do in order to reach the village of Lastingham. Turning
onto a northerly bearing, we stopped just north of the village for a short tea-stop. Again, we encountered the B-Group!
From the tea-stop location we maintained a northerly bearing over Lastingham Ridge and Spaunton Moor until we reached Ana Cross {SE 724 938}. After pausing here to admire the views, we continued our northerly trek to reach the road near Bank Top. There now followed quite a steep descent back into Rosedale Abbey where our coach was waiting to take us on our homeward trip.
Many thanks to Peter Gill for an excellent walk. Incidentally, this was Peter's first 'lead' for the Rambling Club. Well done Peter!

Our three walks on Sunday, 8th July, each took place in the south-eastern coastal region of the North York Moors. The C-Walk started at Sleights. The B- and A-Walks were both scheduled to start at Eller Beck Bridge - however, because of the heavy rainfall and the possibility of
flooding, these walks both started further north and then went along Whinstone Ridge. All walks finished in the delightful town of Whitby {NZ 892 113}. The A-Walk was led by Jane Thompson - pictured below.
From our drop-off point on the A169 road at {NZ 855 026}, our route took us in an easterly direction to John Bond's Sheep House - after which, we joined our original route. We continued our easterly trek in order to reach the A171 road at {NZ 916 029}. After a cautious crossing, we now made our way towards Fylingthorpe where we joined the dis-used railway track at {NZ 945 046} - known locally as the 'Cinder Track'.
Heading north, we followed the Cinder Track in the direction of Robin Hood's Bay and onwards to {NZ 942 075}. At this
point we turned right and followed a down-hill footpath towards the sea in order to reach the Cleveland Way (CW) at Limekiln Slack. We now walked along the CW in a north-westerly direction until we reached Whitby Fog Signal {NZ 927 101}. At this point, we turned in-land and made our way towards Ling Hill Farm where we paused for a short tea-stop.
Leaving our tea-stop location, we continued on a westerly bearing to reach the outskirts of Whitby at {NZ 904 104}. We used the swing bridge to cross the River Esk and then climbed up to the car park on
West Cliff.
As we had arrived back quite early, there was some time available to take some
refreshments before boarding the coach for our homeward journey.
A big 'thank you' to Jane for organising a great walk and a splendid day out.
